Her exit happens to come at a very difficult moment for Meta. CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants AI at the top of his list of priorities, pouring billions into the venture to leap ahead of competition from such firms as OpenAI and Google. He said that his goal for Meta is to establish more than 1 billion users for that AI assistant by also making it develop artificial general intelligence-that is, computers capable of thinking and acting in ways comparable to human beings.

Pineau stated, “With all the changes in the world, the transition from an intense race to an acceleration in AI advances, and the preparation toward the next chapter of Meta, it’s time to make space for others to pursue the work.” I’m cheering from the sidelines, knowing that you’ve got the best ingredients to build some of the greatest AI systems in the world and to introduce them into the lives of billions responsibly.”

Before joining Meta and before the year 2023, Pineau was one of Meta’s foremost AI researchers. She was, at that time, in charge of the company’s principal unit for fundamental AI research, or FAIR. There, for example, she looked into the latest cutting-edge computer studies, some of which would then go into some of the company’s classic applications.

In 2017, she was hired to head the Montreal AI Research Lab at Meta. Also, Pineau is a computer science professor at McGill University, where she serves as the co-director of the Reasoning and Learning Lab.Some of the projects that Pineau pushed forward included the Meta Llama-based open-source AI model and software for AI developers like Pytorch.

Pineau will leave us a few weeks before Meta holds its LlamaCon AI conference, scheduled for April 29. At that event, the company is expected to reveal a new iteration of Llama. In March, Meta Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, whom Pineau reported to, stated that Llama 4 will power AI agents: the latest craze in generative AI. According to CNBC in February, the company will also announce a standalone app for its Meta AI chatbot.

“Thanking Joelle for the leadership she has provided to FAIR,” said a Meta head of AI research official statement. “She has been an important voice for Open Source and helped push breakthroughs to advance our products and the science behind them.” Pineau said that for now, she would like to “give some attention to see what is lying ahead” before “jumping into a new adventure.”
